Guelph Youth Share Messages of Hope with Community in New Christmas Card Campaign

Christmas cards spreading kindness and messages of hope will be delivered to the Guelph General Hospital, St, Joseph Health Centre, and community members over the next week.

The school wide Christmas Card writing campaign was spearheaded by Natasha Finoro, an International Baccalaureate Resource Teacher at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Guelph.

“We were looking at activities to do for December as a school,” shared Finoro. “This was one of the ideas and it helps students to understand that Christmas is not just about what they receive from others.”

For the students at Sacred Heart Guelph – IB PYP Candidate School, sending cards to community members shows others that they are not alone - even though they might not be able to welcome family and friends over Christmas.

Students shared that writing the cards allowed them to be able to show that we care for people and send Christmas joy to people who are away from their family right now.

The Christmas Card writing campaign also helped to achieve the learner profile attributes Sacred Heart strives for as the only International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme candidate school in Wellington County.

“This activity helps students show they are caring communicators, and depending on the audience for their card, can also help develop knowledge, inquiry, thinking, and principles,” said Nicole De Francesco, Sacred Heart Guelph Principal.

Students went above and beyond the Christmas activity, happily creating cards for those in need over the holidays.

“We are trying to make connections to the community and model being active citizens,” said Finoro. “The students were happy to do it. They said it made their hearts warm and they felt happy to be able to do it.”

With the letter writing campaign coming to an end, individuals can expect to find a special card in their mailbox over the next week.
